AI tools are now part of many students’ study routines. Used carefully, they can generate practice questions, offer another explanation and help organise revision. Used poorly, they can create confident-sounding errors and undermine independent learning.
Good uses of AI
- Ask for three questions on a topic, then answer without assistance.
- Request a simpler explanation and compare it with a textbook.
- Ask the tool to challenge your reasoning or identify a missing step.
- Turn your own notes into a quiz, then verify every answer.
Uses to avoid
- Submitting generated writing as your own work.
- Using AI during controlled assessments or where a teacher has prohibited it.
- Trusting citations, calculations or scientific claims without checking.
- Uploading private school, personal or assessment information.
The explain-check-rebuild rule
After using a tool, close it and explain the idea in your own words. Check the explanation against a trusted source, then rebuild the answer independently. If you cannot reproduce the thinking, the tool has completed the task—not helped you learn it.
